At the end of the last year I analyzed many alternative Investment items that I did not consider before – also comic book Investments. At this stage, I also stumbled upon a very helpful early retirement blog which provides very good inside on comic investments. (http://earlyretirementdiary.com/) When comparing the history of comics and looking at some very old European comics eg. the LTB #1 – Lustiges Taschenbuch #1(1967) or the german Supermann- comics (1950) these are only traded in top condition on a 4 to 5 digit area basis which means usually in the area of max. 10.000EUR.
Comparing these facts to the top 10 of highest value US comics (http://www.investinstuff.com/2016/10/06/top-10-comic-book-investments/) we are in the price area of 300.000 USD to 3.000.000 USD.
#Following criteria’s have a negative impact on comic investments in Europe:
- most comic investments take place in the US – not as conservative in terms of investments as Europeans
- the biggest market for comics is definitely Ebay.com –> currently shipping prices from US to Europe are still horrible and not really affordable
- To confirm the grade of comic quality there are certain institutions that do rankings on the original comics which will be sent off to them (all located in the US) –> too high shipping costs
#Facts in favor of the European comic market:
- Still, a young market and comics have theoretically a lot of potential for growing in value
Therefore, to the question “Are comic Investments profitable in Europe?” – in some Cases, yes but the market conditions are way more difficult than in the US. Which means that I will for the upcoming time not consider comic investments as I am certain there are easier ways to make money from alternative investments.
